The Signs Of Yeast InfectionThe signs of yeast infection differ according to the area of the body that becomes affected.

Yeast is present in most of the warm, moist areas of the body including the mouth, vagina, around the penis, the intestinal tract and on some areas of skin.

The most commonly affected are the genital regions and the intestinal tract. However, very few people relate their intestinal symptoms to a yeast infection. The reason for this is obvious. It is often hard to see what is going on inside you.

Signs of a genital yeast infection

Genital yeast infections are more commonly known as thrush and the main signs to look out for include:

Itchy, irritated skin – in females this occurs around the opening of the vagina and as the infection progresses around the vulva as well. The itching is often unrelenting and as a result the skin quickly becomes inflamed to the point of cracking. Males experience itching around the head of the penis and occasionally around the scrotal sac as well. A penile infection can normally be seen as minute white dots on the head of the penis, although these will be masked by the redness of inflammation as the infection progresses.

Discharge – females nearly always experience a thick, white discharge with a yeast infection. This has a ‘yeasty’ smell and can often be gelatinous in texture. Males sometimes produce discharge as well although the infection has to actually enter the penis and travel up the urethra for this to happen. As a result discharge in males is much less common.

Signs of an intestinal yeast infection

It is estimated that around 20% of all adults suffer with an intestinal yeast infection without even knowing it. The signs of yeast infection in the intestine are often overlooked or attributed to other disorders and so the infection is rarely treated. The common symptoms to look out for include the following:

Digestive disorders such as indigestion, bloating, trapped gas, constipation, diarrhea, and some food intolerances. An overgrowth of yeast in the intestinal tract means that food isn’t digested and absorbed as well as it should be, and as a result the aforementioned digestive disorders become apparent.

Tiredness, headaches, muscle aches, fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell and run down. These signs are all due to the reduced ability of the intestine to absorb the necessary nutrients from digested food. Of course they can be due to other illnesses and disorders as well but intestinal yeast infections are often a good place to start with regards to treating the signs and symptoms.

Signs of an oral yeast infection

Yeast infections of the mouth are much less common in adults than they are in babies. Saying that though, they can become a problem for people with a compromised immune system, for those who require frequent bouts of antibiotics and for those who live stressful lives. The signs to look for include pale pink spots on the lips, spots on the tongue and around the mouth that range from white to yellow in color and a burning sensation at the top of the throat.

Signs of a skin yeast infection

Skin yeast infections resemble eczema to a large extent although they can also appear as largish purple patches that itch and eventually blister. The most commonly affected areas include skin-folds, the groin area, under women’s breasts and between the toes. The signs of yeast infection on the skin are often seen in diabetic individuals and those that are bedridden because of illness but anyone can develop this type of infection if their immune system is weak.
